Liselund Castle Hotel (Liselund Ny Slot) is part of a historic estate rooted in late 18th-century Romantic ideals. In the 1790s, French-born nobleman Antoine de Bosc de la Calmette created a landscaped summer retreat on the island of Møn for his wife, Elisabeth Iselin, known as “Lisa.” The estate was conceived as a private refuge where nature, philosophy, and architecture were carefully combined to reflect the emerging Romantic movement which idealized nature and structured informality.

At the heart of the original estate was a petite manor house (Liselund Gammel Slot) built in 1792 by the architect Andreas Kirkerup. The well-preserved interior is thought to have been decorated and furnished by the leading interior architect of the time, court decorator Joseph Chr. Lillie. The house is surrounded by an elaborate garden of lakes, winding paths, and architectural follies inspired by travels and distant cultures. Orderly, aesthetically arranged elements draw attention to landscape features which appear natural.

During the 19th century, the estate passed into the ownership of the Rosenkrantz family, who maintained and developed the property. In 1887, Baron Fritz Rosenkrantz commissioned the construction of a new manor house --today known as Liselund Ny Slot—on a hill overlooking the park. Designed in an Italian-inspired style by architect Philip Smidth, the building introduced a larger and more formal residence while preserving the surrounding Romantic landscape.

The gardens are now part of the National Museum of Denmark, while Liselund Ny Slot operates as an intimate boutique hotel featuring 17 rooms and suites, along with a restaurant and café. During your stay at Liselund, embrace a sense of romance with a leisurely stroll through the gardens, take in the picturesque views, and enjoy a picnic lunch on the lawn, surrounded by the serene beauty of the estate and the playful chatter of ducks and peacocks. Allow time to venture down along the gentle cascade of water to cross the picturesque historic log footbridge and descend the winding path and stairs to the rocky Nordic shoreline. There, stroll along the shore as soft waves lap against the stones and catch your first views of the dramatic chalk cliffs of Moens Klint in the distance.
